Our South Korea trip lasted five weeks. We stayed in Myeongdong in Seoul and spent a week in Busan, mainly around the shopping strip there. With three weeks, I would keep a full Busan week and use the remaining time for Seoul, rather than add several more hotel changes.

This is a proposed family itinerary, combining our photographed stops with additional things to do. It allows twenty nights across twenty-one days: twelve nights in Seoul, seven in Busan, then a final Seoul night before departure. That final night suits a return flight from the Seoul area. If you can fly home from Busan, keep the last night there instead.

First twelve days: a Seoul base in Myeongdong

Day Main plan How I would keep it manageable
1 Arrival and check-in. Find dinner near the accommodation and save the shopping for another day.
2 Myeongdong and the nearby station entrances. Sort transport cards, check the lift route and take a short local walk.
3 Gyeongbokgung Palace. Choose a few sections of the grounds, then eat nearby. Check the opening calendar before fixing this date.
4 Insadong and its craft shops. Give the family time to browse without adding another shopping district.
5 Namdaemun Market and Sungnyemun Gate. Keep the market visit to a few lanes and take a break before heading back.
6 An aquarium or another indoor family attraction. Choose one venue and check its current booking arrangements; SEA LIFE COEX is one Seoul option.
7 A light day near the room. Laundry, a slow breakfast and a short Myeongdong food walk are enough.
8 Hongdae shopping streets. Start later, browse and eat in the same district, then return before everyone is tired.
9 Namsan. Decide whether the outing is a park walk, a transport ride or a separately ticketed tower visit.
10 Dongdaemun Design Plaza and nearby shopping. Pick an exhibition or a few shops; do not plan to stay out simply because the district has late shopping.
11 A short Cheonggyecheon walk or a museum of your choice. Let weather and the children's interests decide. Check step-free stream access where needed.
12 Return to the Seoul area you most want to revisit. Keep the afternoon for packing, snacks and checking the next day's train ticket.

The spare days are intentional. I would move the outdoor outings around the forecast, put museum and palace visits on their open days, and leave room to repeat a successful outing. A family does not need a new attraction every morning to make a longer stay worthwhile.

Traditional buildings from our Seoul visit

Our photographs also include tiled rooftops, exposed timber beams and lattice doors. One looks across the roofs towards the green hills; another shows low tables and floor cushions beneath a timber roof. These are details from the Seoul we visited, alongside the shopping streets and station buildings.

I would leave time to look at the buildings during a walk rather than add another distant attraction. The photographs are from our Seoul visit; they do not identify a particular stop on the suggested route above.

Day 13: the move to Busan

Reserve a Seoul Station–Busan Station train through KORAIL, choosing the service, seats and passenger ages for your group. Check the duration shown for that departure rather than relying on a single generic journey time. A local metro card does not replace this ticket.

Allow time at both ends. The day includes checking out, reaching Seoul Station, finding the train, travelling, reaching the Busan hotel and checking in. I would keep the evening for a meal and a walk near the room.

Days 14–19: a week in Busan without changing hotels

Day Main plan What to leave out
14 Gwangbok-ro and the Nampo shopping area; choose BIFF Square or Gukje Market for another stop. Do not combine all the markets just to tick off names.
15 Gamcheon Culture Village. Skip a long stair-heavy route if it does not suit the children or stroller.
16 Haeundae and a Sky Capsule ride if booked. Leave Gamcheon and the western districts for another day.
17 A light day near the accommodation. Keep laundry and a local meal as the plan instead of replacing the rest day with a distant excursion.
18 Gwangalli Beach and a meal in that area. Avoid assuming beach time means safe swimming in every season.
19 A second visit to the coast, local shopping or an indoor attraction. Leave the choice open until the weather and family energy are clear. Pack for the return.

We mainly stayed around the shopping strip during our Busan week. For a new booking, I would compare Nampo/Gwangbok-ro for markets and shopping with Seomyeon for metro connections. Either can work as a single base; check the real door-to-station walk and room setup. Neither puts all the coastal stops within walking distance.

Give Gamcheon a shorter route

The hillside is visible in our photographs, and it affects the visit. There are slopes and stairs, with homes among the visitor routes. I would use a bus or taxi for the uphill approach as appropriate, choose a manageable section and keep voices down near houses. Follow the marked access and respect private lanes. It is not a place to assume a stroller can go everywhere.

Book the coastal ride deliberately

The Sky Capsule runs between Mipo and Cheongsapo and is separate from the metro. Reserve the correct departure station, check the entry window and leave time for waiting. Decide how to return before starting. The Beach Train is a different product; check the ticket you buy rather than assuming the capsule includes a return train.

Days 20–21: return and fly home

Day 20: take the intercity train back to Seoul, then check into the final room. I would choose accommodation for a straightforward onward airport transfer, with dinner nearby. Keep the evening free of tickets and substantial shopping.

Day 21: check out and travel to the airport with the buffer your airline and transfer require. Check the airport and terminal; a Seoul-area flight is not automatically an Incheon departure.

For a flight out of Busan instead, keep day 20 there and depart on day 21. The night count becomes twelve in Seoul and eight in Busan, with no return intercity journey.

Food and everyday transport

The trains were one of the easy parts of our own trip. For a family following this route, I would use a current journey planner, keep the accommodation address saved and allow extra time for station lifts. A reloadable card such as Tmoney can simplify local travel in both cities; ask about the correct child-fare registration and check how you will top up. Keep KTX reservations separate.

For meals, give the street-food evenings a place alongside seated lunches and dinners. Use our top-five Myeongdong food guide as a shortlist, buying one or two things at a time. Staying in one district gives you another evening to try something else.

Read our five-week journal for the trip photographs, or use the one-week and two-week plans if your available time is shorter.
