For ten days, I would resist doubling the five-day plan. The extra time is useful because it lets you spread the outings out. We learned to appreciate that during our longer stay in Canmore. Returning to the same base meant we could explore, then have an ordinary day without feeling we were falling behind.

This is a proposed route for a family with a car. It reflects how we would plan from our experience of staying here, rather than a diary of ten consecutive days. The order should move with the weather. Lake transport and any booked activity are the fixed parts; most of the rest can stay flexible.

Days 1 and 2: Settle in before heading out

Use arrival day for the accommodation and a food shop. A short walk around town is plenty if the journey has been tiring. The following day can be a proper Canmore day, with coffee and a conditions-appropriate walk near the water. Those local days were part of what we enjoyed, rather than gaps between the important attractions.

If you want a longer walk, research the actual trail and its current condition. Grassi Lakes is a possibility when open and suitable, but it needs a separate check rather than a casual promise that it works for every family. Keep the afternoon free enough to change your mind.

Day 3: Banff and Bow Falls

Spend a day around Banff town and Bow Falls. Leave time to eat and explore at a comfortable pace. If everyone still wants more, consider an additional accessible viewpoint. I would not fill the morning with paid activities and then expect a child to enjoy every stop in town afterwards.

Banff National Park needs the appropriate federal admission. It is not covered by a Kananaskis vehicle pass. Check the road and weather information before leaving Canmore, even if the forecast looked promising when you first booked the trip.

Day 4: A quieter day in Canmore

Stay local. Revisit a walk you liked, have a slow breakfast or leave the morning unplanned. A longer stay works better when it includes time you do not have to justify. For our family, having that option helped make a house base worthwhile.

This could also be the evening for a pub meal or a brewery visit. Our drinks guide puts the Drake and Sheepdog near the top. Check the current rules for children and any event restrictions before planning an outing around them, and arrange the journey home if you are drinking.

Day 5: Lake Louise, with the season checked first

Give Lake Louise a full day if it is a priority. Decide transport in advance, and take food or budget for buying it there. Our sandwiches and coffee at the Fairmont came to about C$60, which is why I would make the lunch decision before arriving hungry.

Summer lake shuttles finished on 12 October in 2026. The resort summer lift finished on 11 October. Moraine Lake Road is closed to ordinary private cars. Those facts change what can sensibly be combined, particularly later in autumn. Use our lake guide for the distinctions, then check the official arrangements for your dates.

If services are operating in your season, you could plan an appropriate lake combination through the authorised transport system. After the season, do not assume that same trip can be recreated by car. Keep an alternative day ready rather than trying to force it.

Day 6: No long drive

Make this a base day. After a bigger outing, I would stay around Canmore and enjoy the town without a departure time. If you are travelling with a child, it is also useful space for whatever ordinary jobs have built up during the trip.

A late start does not spoil this day. There is still a mountain setting outside. That was one of the pleasures of living here for a while: the surroundings did not disappear just because we chose to do less.

Day 7: Kananaskis, if conditions suit

Choose one manageable part of Kananaskis rather than trying to cover the whole area. An accessible lake viewpoint or a visitor-centre-led outing can be a better family choice than committing to a hike you have not assessed. Roads and daylight need considering as well as the walking distance.

Parking in applicable provincial parks and public-land areas requires the Kananaskis Conservation Pass. Buy it for the right vehicle and check the coverage map. It does not apply simply because you are staying in Canmore, and it does not replace national-park admission.

Day 8: Keep a weather day available

Use this as the day you move an earlier plan into if needed. If the weather has been kind, choose another local walk or spend more time in town. There is no obligation to find an extra major attraction just because the space remained free.

Calgary is a possible city-day alternative when you want a change from the mountain outings. Pick an indoor attraction that actually interests your family and check its opening details before committing to the drive. I would keep that as a separate day, with the city itself as the destination.

Day 9: Choose one final bigger outing

For a longer day, consider Yoho and Emerald Lake if the route and conditions make it sensible. This is a researched option we would consider, not a claim about a particular family visit. Start by checking Parks Canada information for Yoho and the road reports. A pretty photograph is not enough to decide whether a late-autumn day trip is suitable.

If that feels too far, return to Banff or spend the day locally. Ten days gives you permission to repeat something you enjoyed. I would rather finish with a good day than a new place chosen only to make the itinerary longer.

Day 10: Pack without rushing

Leave a relaxed departure morning. If your travel arrangements allow a final coffee, enjoy it. If they do not, move on without trying to squeeze in another stop. The point of adding time to this trip is to make it easier, including at the end.

Passes and spending

Published prices checked on 15 October 2026 were C$24.50 for Banff family/group daily admission, C$15 for a Kananaskis vehicle day pass and C$90 for its annual version. A family/group Discovery Pass was C$167.50. Seven paid family national-park days at the daily rate would total C$171.50, so compare your actual park days before buying. A ten-day stay in Canmore does not automatically mean ten paid park days.

Allow separately for accommodation and fuel. Meals can vary enormously depending on how often you cook. We would choose accommodation with useful cooking facilities for this length of stay, then leave room in the food budget for a few stops we actually wanted to make. Our coffee guide includes a published latte-price reference to help with the smaller purchases.

Johnston Canyon was subject to an official closure issued on 13 October 2026, so it is not a promised stop here. Check Banff updates and Yoho updates before travelling. Fernie belongs in a separate overnight extension; our own visit was three nights in a large RV.
