OUR STORY

We’re Michael and Edlyn.

We’re Michael and Edlyn. Brisbane is home, and we’re currently in Canada with our daughter. We keep her name and age private, but travelling as a family is a big part of how we choose where to go and how long to stay.

Our sabbatical started with a Christmas conversation with family in Kelowna. Someone suggested taking a break together and looking at Canada’s International Experience Canada program. We were tired of the nine-to-five and needed a breather. What began as a suggestion gradually became a plan, and we started the break in February 2026.

Travel had been part of our lives long before that. Our first trip was Japan in 2013. Dubai and France followed in 2015, and we returned to Japan several times during 2016–2019, particularly around Tokyo and Osaka. We kept going back after that too, with visits continuing through 2026. We visited Fiji and Thailand across 2021–22, then spent part of 2023–24 on a larger European adventure, including Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Prague and Spain.

When we were younger, it was two backpacks and a lot of moving between places. We wanted to see as much as we could. Once our daughter arrived, we began choosing a central base and exploring from there. We researched an area more carefully and learned to let a day be smaller than we’d originally planned if that suited us better.

This year, we spent about six months based at a house in Canmore. We made shorter trips to explore other areas too, including three nights in a large RV in Fernie. That way of travelling has given us more time to get to know a place while keeping somewhere familiar to come back to.

We still get things wrong. We booked our lakes and resort outings on 6 October, close to the end of the summer season. Next time we’d organise those tickets much earlier. We also remembered spending about C$60 on sandwiches and coffee at the Fairmont Lake Louise. Those are the sorts of details we want to pass on, alongside the photographs.

Off We Roam is where we’re keeping the experiences and practical lessons from our world travels. We want the guides to help families and other travellers understand the costs and the bits that might catch them out on a first visit. There’s no course to buy to get the useful information.

Our photographs are our own. The spending we remember is labelled as ours; researched prices are there as planning references. You can find us or send us a message on Instagram, @off_weroam.
