Golden slopes, enormous mountain views, and a much quieter side of Lake Louise.

First, know which Lake Louise you’re visiting
The Lake Louise Ski Resort sightseeing gondola starts at 1 Whitehorn Road, a drive from the famous turquoise lakeshore. It does not lift you directly from the lake or the Fairmont hotel. The resort offers a scenic ride high above the valley, with views towards Lake Louise, glaciers, forest and the surrounding peaks.
When can you ride in fall?
For 2026, the resort lists sightseeing gondola operations June 5–October 11, daily 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with the last ride down at 5:10 p.m. The journey takes roughly 15 minutes each way. Fall visitors should aim for September or early October; the sightseeing service is not guaranteed after October 11. Bad weather can interrupt operations. Check the resort's official tickets and operating information before setting off.
How to get on the lift, step by step
- Drive to Lake Louise Ski Resort, at 1 Whitehorn Road, rather than to the lakeshore parking area.
- Buy sightseeing tickets online ahead of time for the advertised discount, or purchase them at the resort.
- Collect your tickets by scanning the QR code from your purchase receipt at a ticket pickup box, or ask Guest Services in the main lodge.
- Follow signs to the sightseeing gondola loading area. Staff will direct you to the operating lift and help you board.
- Choose an enclosed gondola where available if travelling with younger children or if the autumn wind is biting. Children under 12 or shorter than 106 cm (42 inches) must travel with an adult and in an enclosed gondola.
- Ride up, explore, and return on the gondola. You don't have to reserve a particular boarding time; allow enough time to catch the last descent.
The resort may offer open chairs as well as enclosed cabins, but check which option is operating on your day. Pets are not allowed on the sightseeing gondola.
What is at the top?
At approximately 2,101 metres (6,893 feet), the main attraction is the broad panorama: layers of Rocky Mountain peaks, forests, glaciers and views towards Lake Louise across the valley. Look for marked viewpoints and available walking routes. Depending on the season and operating schedule, interpretive experiences and food service may also be available. Do not assume every trail, restaurant or activity will be open in late fall—ask staff on arrival.
Allow two to three hours for a relaxed family outing, including the ride, photos and time at the top. The lift ride itself is an activity, even if you decide not to hike.
How much for a family of three?
These are the resort's 2026 sightseeing rates in Canadian dollars, before any applicable taxes. The third person's age changes the price.
| Your family | At the ticket window | Online with 10% off |
|---|---|---|
| Two adults + child age 6–12 | CA$146 | CA$131.40 |
| Two adults + teen age 13–17 | CA$159 | CA$143.10 |
| Two adults + child age 5 or younger | CA$130 | CA$117 |
For comparison, the family package covers two adults and up to three children/youth aged 6–17 and is advertised at CA$154 at the window / around CA$138 online. For a family of only three, individual tickets can be cheaper—especially with a child aged 6–12. Prices may change, and taxes may apply. Check current tickets and family package terms.
Why fall is special
In September, golden groundcover and yellow larches add colour beneath the grey and blue mountain walls. The weather is less predictable than in summer: a sunny base area can mean cold wind or snow higher up. Bring warm layers, a windproof jacket, sturdy shoes, water and snacks. Stay on signed paths, give wildlife lots of space, and follow any trail restrictions. Bears may be visible from the lift, but sightings are never guaranteed.
For photographs, give yourself time to enjoy the ride and the summit viewpoints. Our favourite kind of stop is one where the family can linger rather than rush straight back down.
Can you combine it with Lake Louise or Moraine Lake?
Yes, but these are different places and involve separate transport. The resort sells some gondola-and-lakeshore shuttle combinations during the sightseeing season. Check availability and schedules before booking. A day with the gondola and the Lake Louise lakeshore is possible, but with a child it can be nicer to choose one as your main outing and leave room for a slower afternoon.
Our practical fall tips
- Arrive in the morning to give yourselves time if the weather changes.
- Check the operating date: by mid-October, summer sightseeing may already have ended.
- Choose the enclosed cabin for young children and colder days.
- Budget for the correct child age, rather than assuming the family package is the best deal.
- Don't confuse the ski resort gondola with the Banff Gondola on Sulphur Mountain; they are separate attractions.
