We had five weeks between Seoul and Busan, including a week in Busan. With only seven days, I would stay in Seoul and use Myeongdong as the base, as we did on our trip. That gives a family six nights in one room, with arrival and departure included in the seven days.
This is a suggested shorter itinerary, not a record of the order in which we visited places. It combines our photographed stops with other family outing options. One main outing a day leaves room for meals, a slower start or a child who has had enough walking.
Seven days, six nights, one base
| Day | Main plan | Leave room for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, reach Myeongdong and check in. Find the station entrance and somewhere nearby for dinner. | Keep the first walk short; a flight day does not need an attraction booking. |
| 2 | Visit Gyeongbokgung Palace. Choose a few courtyards to explore instead of trying to cover every building. | Lunch in the surrounding area and, if everyone is still interested, a short browse in Insadong. |
| 3 | Make Namdaemun Market the main outing, with Sungnyemun Gate nearby. | A return to the room before an evening food walk in Myeongdong. |
| 4 | Choose an indoor family attraction, such as SEA LIFE COEX, Seoul Aquarium. Check tickets and access before setting off. | A meal in the same area, then head back rather than adding another distant district. |
| 5 | Explore Hongdae's shopping streets in the afternoon. | Browse with a stopping point in mind, have an early dinner and use the train back. |
| 6 | Spend a morning around Namsan, choosing the walking route or transport that suits your family. | Your remaining Myeongdong shopping and a final sit-down dinner. A tower visit is optional and separately ticketed. |
| 7 | Check out and travel to the airport. | Leave the day clear if your flight is early; add only a nearby breakfast or walk for a later flight. |
Reorder days for actual opening dates and weather. A palace closure belongs on a different day, and a wet day can become the indoor outing. Check the attraction's current calendar before attaching bookings to the table.

Why I would keep Myeongdong as the base
We stayed here during our own trip. For a week, I would look for a family room within a manageable walk of Myeongdong Station on Line 4 or Euljiro 1-ga on Line 2. Check the real room capacity, beds and noise comments before booking. Being above the busiest street is less useful if the family cannot sleep.
Namdaemun is served by Hoehyeon on Line 4, so the market day need not involve a complicated transfer. On other days, use a current route planner and choose the exit for the attraction, not simply the first exit you see. With a stroller, check the lift route separately.
Make the trains part of the preparation
We found the rail networks easy to navigate. I would still sort out the basics on the first full day:
- Get a suitable reloadable transport card, such as Tmoney, for each fare-paying traveller. Ask about registering a child's age for the correct fare.
- Load credit and check how to top it up. Carry won for machines or shops where your foreign payment card is not accepted for the top-up.
- Before entering, check the destination, line, direction and transfer. Keep your accommodation's address saved in Korean as well as English.
- Tap in and out as required, and keep the card somewhere easy to reach.
- Allow extra time for lifts, toilets and station passages. A short train ride is only part of the door-to-door journey.
The airport transfer is a separate route-planning decision. Check your airport, terminal and arrival time before choosing a train or bus; the best option depends on where the room is and how much luggage you have.
Food and shopping without filling every evening
Use the Myeongdong top-five street-food guide for one or two evening walks. I would choose a savoury snack and a sweet one between us, then see whether everyone wants more. Keep a seated meal in the plan rather than relying on a line of food carts to provide everything a child wants for dinner.
Insadong, Hongdae and Namdaemun give the shopping days different settings. They are options to explore at your family's pace, not three districts to complete in one afternoon. Choose a few streets and a meal stop, then go back when the outing has run its course.
If you want Busan too
For a seven-day trip I would save it for another visit. If both cities are essential, choose four nights in Seoul and two in Busan, drop several Seoul outings and arrange a flight home from Busan where practical. An intercity train day still includes packing, reaching the station, the journey and checking in. Our two-week itinerary gives that move more room.
